James maddison team mate confused about his recent predicament

People close to James Maddison are confused over what’s happened to the midfielder at Tottenham Hotspur recently.

It’s no secret that James Maddison hasn’t been at his best since returning from an ankle injury in January.

The Englishman enjoyed a stunning start to his Tottenham career following a £40 million switch from Leicester City last summer.

Maddison scooped the Premier League’s Player of the Month back in August and had a hand in eight goals in his first 11 games for the club.

Spurs were unbeaten after their first 10 league games under Ange Postecoglou and Maddison had starred in the middle of the park.

The 27-year-old was then forced off with an ankle injury in a 4-1 home defeat to Chelsea back in November, which would keep him out for over two months.

Since returning, he’s managed just three goal involvements in his last 12 games and recently admitted he’s yet to return to top form.

What people close to Maddison are saying about his form

The Athletic claim that people close to Maddison’s situation at Tottenham are ‘mystified’ by his recent form.

There is a thought that the former Leicester man is trying too hard at the moment due to his recent downturn in form.

With the Euros just around the corner, Maddison will be feeling the pressure to perform and earn a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Ange Postecoglou faces Maddison decision ahead of Chelsea clash

Maddison is yet to complete the full 90 minutes in a game since returning from injury.

The Englishman has often been hooked around the hour mark in recent weeks and suffered the same fate in Sunday’s North London Derby.

Ange Postecoglou moved Dejan Kulusevski into a central position after taking Maddison off against Arsenal, a move he has experimented with in the latter’s absence.

Giovani Lo Celso also performed well while Maddison was sidelined and the Argentine will be desperate to get another opportunity to impress.

For the time being, you’d imagine that Maddison will keep his place as Spurs make the short trip across London to Stamford Bridge tomorrow night.

But should he fail to impress, Postecoglou may have a decision to make on the midfielder’s place in the side ahead of Sunday’s trip to Anfield.
