Newcastle United will be desperate to avoid a repeat of the PSR disaster that damaged this summer’s transfer window.

The Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules have well and truly shackled Newcastle United’s growth since the 2021 takeover.

The controversial regulations have stopped Newcastle from being able to invest in the playing squad in recent windows while forcing the Magpies to sell some of their brightest talents.

Newcastle faced a potential points deduction if they didn’t raise funds through player sales before June 30th. Unfortunately, the sale of academy stars represents bigger profit on the accounts and therefore Newcastle chose to offload Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35m.

Anderson revealed it was “tough” to leave Newcastle as a boyhood fan, but the club had little choice because of PSR. Yankuba Minteh was also sold to Brighton for £33m to help evade punishment.

Much of the focus since the PiF takeover has been around growing revenue streams so that Newcastle can afford to invest more without being hamstrung by PSR.

However, it seems the club are also exploring other avenues to try and navigate the financial rules.

According to iNews, Newcastle have hired a full-time psychologist to work with the loans team and player recruitment.

The club is aiming to improve the overall loan experience for young players and replicate the success of Minteh’s signing – Newcastle paid around £6m for Minteh before selling him for a £27m profit.

The report suggests the new hire is the club’s latest step in the “blueprint to bust PSR”.

Newcastle are expected to target young players with raw potential and look to develop them into superstars at St James’ Park. It is viewed as a critical part of the club’s long-term plan and the recruitment of a psychologist will help to create the best environment for young players to thrive.

The summer was a huge hurdle for Newcastle given their meteoric rise to the Champions League under new owners.

It was frustrating to see the club miss out on their top targets, but sporting director Paul Mitchell will now have a £70m budget for the upcoming January window.

While Newcastle will need to strike a balance between experience and youth in their signings, it is good to see the club have a clear long-term plan to target young players.

Minteh has already shown that it’s a strategy that can succeed, but ideally Newcastle will want to keep hold of their biggest stars rather than sell them on.
