Neal Maupay hits out at Everton as Marseille transfer edges closer

As Neil Maupay’s transfer to Marseille nears completion, the online troll has aimed a dig at Everton on his way out. The French striker replied to a Fabrizio Romano tweet, confirming the deal to Marseille is on, with a clip from the 1994 film The Shawshank Redemption.

The clip in question is when Andy Dufrense, played by Tim Robbins, escapes the gloomy jailhouse, Shawshank, and removes his prison uniform in the rain.

According to Romano, the striker will leave Everton on loan initially, although Marseille will have an obligation to buy him for £3 million. The Blues will also have a 20 per cent sell-on clause in any future sale

Earlier in the week the former Brentford forward reacted to footage shared online of Everton supporters abusing players at Euston station. The squad were travelling back north after a 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Maupay posted on X: “Imagine another job where it’s normalised to get abuse like this. Hanging around at a train station to scream at men who are trying their best.”

The Frenchman has been a controversial figure throughout his time at Everton, becoming synonymous with his ‘trolling’ posts on X.

During his time at Goodison Park, Maupay made 32 appearances, scoring once.

He spent last season on loan at Brentford and again got embroiled in a spat with James Maddison, after the midfielders celebration after scoring in a 3-2 defeat.
