Gary O’Neil has dropped an update on his Wolves future that is sure to go down very well with fans.

The manager has sat down with the E&S, appearing on their latest podcast and spoke about a variety of topics.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Wolves had opened talks with O’Neil about a new contract, as a reward for the brilliant work he has done at the club so far.

O’Neil came in at short notice this time last year, but oversaw a successful season at Molineux, keeping the club well away from the relegation zone in the end.

It has been a bit quiet regarding the manager’s future recently.

But he has now been asked about the situation – and given a response Wolves fans will love.

Back in March, it was claimed that Wolves were going to open talks with O’Neil about a new contract. It was also suggested that the proposed new contract would include a ‘significant’ buy-out clause.

There is recognition of the brilliant job O’Neil had done, and the club are keen to reward their head coach.

Just recently though, there has been very little about the manager’s future.

There was some brief talk about him being admired within the FA, with Gareth Southgate having resigned as England manager.

This was put to O’Neil on the latest E&S podcast, and he started to talk about his future at Wolves.

After admitting that he would obviously love to manage England someday, he said: “It doesn’t feel like a conversation (England job) that needs to be had now. I am unbelievably happy at Wolves. And I love what Wolves have done for me and I’m loving what I’m trying to do for Wolves.

“Me and the club are really aligned on what we want to do. It shouldn’t be a problem. I don’t envisage it being a problem. I don’t want to speak on behalf of the club but just on my side, (I’m) more than happy to extend how long I’m going to be here.

“I don’t think there’s anything imminent. But I don’t see there being any issues if the club are still really keen and I’m still really keen.”

O’Neil says what the fans want to hear

It appears that O’Neil signing a new contract at Wolves is now a question of when, and not if.

The situation had gone quiet in recent months. And then, there were a few concerns when O’Neil’s name started to get mentioned in terms of the England job.

But it sounds like he is absolutely laser-focused on Wolves and the project he is overseeing at Molineux.

Clearly, he is extremely grateful for the club taking a chance on him after his harsh sacking by Bournemouth, and there is potential for him to do special things.

Hopefully, official confirmation of that new deal will arrive fairly soon.
