In the night session of the US Open one of the biggest surprises of the last few years, certainly the most shocking of 2024. Carlos Alcaraz – winner of this tournament in 2022 and one of the big favorites for the win – was defeated in three sets by Botic van de Zandschulp in a match that revealed all the current difficulties of the Spanish champion.

The 21-year-old from Murcia never really got into the match and made many unusual unforced errors, proving he did not have the energy to get far in this tournament. The many matches played in the last two and a half months have exhausted Carlitos’ body and mind, who would have needed a longer break after the Paris Olympics. The feeling is that the four-time Grand Slam champion has not yet settled his disappointment of losing the final at the Paris Olympics, in which he was very convinced to beat Novak Djokovic on his favorite surface and win the gold medal for his country.

The former world number 1 is also in danger of sinking into the ATP ranking, as he could be fifth at the end of the last Grand Slam of the season. The Spaniard will have to talk to his team and figure out what went wrong in the last few weeks, including remembering the premature elimination in Cincinnati.

The US Open lost Carlitos

Alcaraz could have faced Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals of the tournament but now it’s all changed and there is curiosity to see who will advance on this part of the table. The highest seeded driver here is Alex De Minaur but also watch out for our Matteo Arnaldi and British ace Jack Draper.

Through his X account, Italian tennis legend and now top analyst Paolo Bertolucci commented on the challenge and reflected on Alcaraz’s loss, here is his tweet: “With the exit of @carlosalcaraz the board begins to lighten. A maximum weight comes out confirming that continuity is not for everyone.”

In the tweet Bertolucci makes a couple of clear references, first of all he points out how now the scoreboard has opened but above all it is another message that emphasizes almost a praise to Jannik Sinner. In the end of the tweet Paolo says ‘continuity is not from everyone’ and the reference is obviously to Jannik Sinner, tennis player who has made continuity in this season one of his best results, constantly in the final parts of the tournament, Regardless of whether or not the tournament is won. Both Alcaraz and Sinner are very young and the two are in the early part of their career and they are very young.

The Spanish ace is disappointed

During the press conference, Carlitos revealed his feelings: “I don’t know what to say right now. I think he played very well. He produced great tennis. I thought he would give me more free points, but he made no mistakes. That confused me a bit. I didn’t know how to handle that. I couldn’t raise my level. I think my tennis has always been at the same point. It wasn’t enough to give me a chance to win. What can I say? I didn’t feel good hitting the ball, and I made many mistakes. When I wanted to come back, it was already too late.”

The Spaniard is mentally exhausted right now: “I feel that, instead of taking steps forward, I’ve gone backward in terms of mindset. I don’t know why. I came from a spectacular summer, saying that mentally I had taken steps forward, but I get to this part of the tour, and I take steps back. Mentally, I’m not well, not strong. This is a problem. Right now, I don’t want to say anything. I want to talk to my people and see what steps we take next. I hadn’t thought about all the demanding matches being so close together and how that could affect me.” The next tournament of Alcaraz should be the Laver Cup.
