WHY TIMO WERNER WILL BE A SUCCESS AT TOTTENHAM
Tottenham Hotspur have announced that Timo Werner has joined the club on loan for the rest of the season. Werner is running low on confidence having struggled in his second season at RB Leipzig and with Euro 2024 in Germany on the horizon, the 27-year-old will want to earn his place back in the squad, but can this move work out for him at Tottenham and can he earn his place back?
Why Werner will be successful at Tottenham
The big miss for Tottenham in the coming weeks will be Heung Min-Son who is away with South Korea at the Asia Cup. Werner’s versatility is where he will help Spurs massively. The 27-year-old can play as a left winger as well as a striker. It will likely mean that he will play in Son’s position until he returns from Qatar.
Werner’s success came when he would play as a second striker playing off of a bigger striker such as Yussuf Poulsen or Patrik Schick, whether it is the aim for Richarlison to replicate that just to accommodate Werner is unlikely. The only downfall is that Werner is not an out-and-out winger and does not possess as much of a wide skill set as Son. The alternative is that Werner plays a striker, when he has previously been asked to play in this position he has struggled at times
Tactically, Werner comes from a team that also plays an aggressive style of attacking football which means he should be able to fit into the system that Ange Postecoglou wishes to play.
For reference of how Werner could perform, look at Kyogo Furuhashi and his time under Postecoglou at Celtic. In his second season under the Australian, Kyogo played 50 times across all competitions scoring 34 and assisting five times and would ultimately win the Scottish Premier League Player of the Year for the 22/23 season. The now 28-year-old was key tactically when it came to pressing and running in behind the opposition defence, the attacker thrived in his role and under new Celtic manager Brenden Rodgers has struggled this season due to his style of football compared to his predecessor.
Kyogo has a similar profile to Werner and if the German can be utilised in a similar manner then the goals may be able to flow for Werner like they have done for Richarlison recently, and the 27-year-old will be able to think about potentially representing Germany in the summer.
Can Werner earn his place back in the Germany squad for Euro 2024?
If Werner is able to pick up any sort of form during his return to England then he will likely earn a recall to the national team. The bar for attackers in the German national team this year is rather low with Leroy Sané the only player performing at a high level.
The likes of Chris Führich and eventually Deniz Undav are called up for their club form but Niclas Füllkrug and recently Marvin Ducksch are not the quality of strikers Germany needs to go deep into an international competition. Whilst Werner’s former Chelsea teammate Kai Havertz is not a striker.
Werner’s qualities would be useful to Germany when they need to go a different route against better teams than them, whilst there is the possibility that he could work with a ‘bigger’ striker in a formula that worked during Werner’s first spell at Leipzig under current Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann.
The 27-year-old is a player low on confidence and his spells in England and his return to Germany have not helped him in any way but if Postecoglou is able to give him any bit of confidence or a revival, Werner could easily be just as much of a success as Richarlison.
