Wolves want to sign LaLiga centre-back who was a better passer than Kilman last season

Wolves remain open to signing a replacement for Max Kilman – and they apparently have eyes on a player from La Liga.

Kilman left the club around a month ago now, joining West Ham United in a £40 million deal.

It was a move that many fans have praised. While Kilman is a great Premier League centre-back, the feeling for many was that he was not irreplaceable. And ultimately, the club have turned a huge profit on him after signing him for just £40,000.

But now, Gary O’Neil has to consider if he will sign a replacement.

The feeling is that if the right player is out there, then Wolves will indeed sign someone.

And apparently, there is a defender in La Liga who is currently piquing the club’s interest.

Wolves interested in Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera

According to Give Me Sport, Wolves are still looking at players like David Carmo from FC Porto and Nico Elvedi of Borussia Monchengladbach.

But, in addition to those two, Wolves are looking at a potential move for Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera.

Mosquera, 20, has been earmarked as a potential successor to Kilman. Supposedly, he has enjoyed an impressive pre-season so far with the Spanish giants.

The Spanish youth international has been with Valencia since 2016, and has progressed through the ranks. After shining for the B team, he made his first-team debut in January 2022 in the Copa del Rey.

He has gone on to make 49 appearances to date.

At the moment, the player is on Olympics duty with Spain.

According to respected analysis website Breaking The Lines, Mosquera is particularly good one-vs-one defender. They said of him in a feature: “Cristhian Mosquera is already one of the best 1v1 defenders in La Liga, and at just 19 (now 20), he has certainly earned his place in Valencia’s defense for years to come.”

He actually also had higher pass accuracy than Kilman last season in the league (88.3% vs 85.7%, via fbref).

Wolves should target someone with more experience

So Wolves could potentially move for Mosquera this summer.

But arguably, Wanderers would be better served trying to sign someone who is a little older following Kilman’s departure.

Santi Bueno still doesn’t have much Premier League experience and Yerson Mosquera has only just come back into the first-team picture after time away on loan. He is yet to make his Premier League debut.

Craig Dawson is obviously a veteran. But Wolves could perhaps just do with someone with a bit more experience under their belt, as promising as Cristhian Mosquera is.

But we know what the Wolves way is now. It is mainly to buy young and develop, so the situation with Mosquera should be kept an eye on.
