Wolverhampton Deal “Collapse” Revealed Lately And The Coach Was Solely The…
He rejected a move to Wolves on transfer deadline day, now he’s flying in the Champions League
A slow burner of a transfer window ended up with Wolves signing three new players, much to the delight of Vitor Pereira.
Wolves saw Emmanuel Agbadou, Nasser Djiga and Marshall Munetsi all arrive at Molineux, as Vitor Pereira strengthened in defence and midfield
The Old Gold also had several other targets on their wishlist and were scampering for some last-minute deals before capturing Djiga and Munetsi on deadline day.
Wolves bid £12.5m for Thomas Kristensen but were reportedly £1.2m short of triggering Udinese’s valuation of the centre-back.
Pereira was also in the market for a new left wing-back to rival Rayan Ait-Nouri, and Liam Keen mooted Manchester United’s Tyrell Malacia as a possible option.
However, the 25-year-old opted against signing for Wolves in favour of a move to PSV Eindhoven, and one big factor explains why.
Tyrell Malacia favoured Champions League football at PSV over Wolves
According to journalist Martijn Krabbendam, as relayed by Dutch outlet Voetbal Verslaafd, Malacia had an opportunity to join Wolves on transfer deadline day but chose a move to PSV.
“But Feyenoord already has three left backs and that guy just chooses his own career,” Krabbendam said. “He could also go to Wolverhampton Wanderers, but if PSV comes… Then you just go and play for PSV? I understand the sentiment, but players reason differently.”
A loan move for Malacia emerged as a possibility because he’d only played 99 minutes of Premier League football for Man United this term, with injuries and poor form limiting his starting chances.
So, once an opportunity to play for a Champions League club arose as opposed to Wolves – who are fighting relegation – there’s no surprise the Dutchman favoured a return to his home country.
And in the early stages of his PSV career, he’s already showing signs of being a shrewd loan capture, helping his new side qualify for the last 16 of Europe’s elite competition.
Malacia helps PSV into Champions League round of 16
PSV hosted Juventus in the Champions League play-off round, knowing a place in the last 16 of the competition was at stake.
The Dutch side came into this clash 2-1 down after losing in Turin but produced a stunning comeback to take the game to extra time, with centre-back Ryan Flamingo scoring a 98th-minute winner.
Malacia started on the bench for this showdown, though the Man Utd loanee replaced Richard Ledesma in the 78th minute and was praised for his performance by sections of the Dutch media
According to Voetbal Primeur, it’s only a ‘matter of time’ before he replaces Ledesma and becomes the starting left-back, handing him a 7/10 rating.
“Came on after 78 minutes. It seems only a matter of time before he pushes Ledezma to the bench,” they wrote.
Voetbal International, meanwhile, rated Malacia at 6.5 out of 10, believing that he enjoyed a solid performance off the bench.
Although the Dutchman turned down Wolves and is flourishing at PSV, there are no hard feelings, as Ait-Nouri is easily the better player.
