‘Will sell’: Newcastle to cash in on £26m man Sven Botman
Financial Fairplay is a sticking point for most Premier League clubs these days, even when you have all the money in the world to spend – like Newcastle United. But Miguel Almiron could help them out.
Before such rules, a new owner could come in and spend a fortune. Manchester City and Chelsea did, after big-money takeovers. But for the Saudi Arabia PIF and Amanda Staveley, it has been a lot harder.
They have had to be patient, spending their huge cash wisely without breaking the rules. It has meant that Newcastle have also had to sell to balance the books – and it will be no different come the summer.
In January, Newcastle came close to selling Almiron for Al-Shabab for £26m. The 30-year-old winger remains a key player, but Newcastle need to sell players in order to spend their vast amounts of cash.
Almiron could be on that is sacrificed. According to Ben Jacobs on Give Me Sport, Newcastle are still open to the sale of the Paraguay star in the summer – but only if the price is right for the attacker.
“I would expect more interest from Saudi Arabia and other countries. It’s not clear whether the player would move to Saudi Arabia. But if the right offer comes in for Miguel Almiron, Newcastle will sell him.”

He is a top player – but he has not been able to perform the heroics he did last season. Just five goals in 40 games this season. Described as “unbelievable” by Sven Botman, Almiron is now in his thirties.
If Newcastle can get a fee north of £20m for the 50-time Paraguay international, the reluctantly, they have to take it. It frees up funds coming in, and eases Financial Fairplay constraints, in the market.
It is not as if Newcastle are lacking out wide. They have Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes and plenty more options on the flanks. He’s a fan favourite and it is harsh, but if the deal is right, he has to be sold.
