What Make Ezri Konsa insists Unai Emery To improved his game
Ezri Konsa has claimed that his idol and former Aston Villa assistant John Terry contacted him to congratulate him on receiving his first England call-up. Konsa maintains that Unai Emery has enhanced his game in ways that even he cannot describe.
The Villa defender is yet to make his senior debut, but he did win the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup and earned seven caps for the U21s, adding the 2018 Toulon Tournament to his list of international achievements. During this November international break, he might play for Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions against North Macedonia on Monday and Malta on Friday.
Under three managers—Smith, Steven Gerrard, and Emery—Konsa has made 156 appearances for the team since signing from Brentford in the summer of 2019. The 26-year-old has started each league match that Emery has overseen while serving as Villa’s head coach, and he was instrumental in the team’s recovery under the Spaniard.
“His CV speaks for itself, he has won European trophies,” Konsa said. “When I heard he was coming in I was really exited and I knew that I would excel under a manager like Unai. He has really developed me into a man. I was a man, but now I feel like a man on the pitch. I’m becoming a leader and he has helped me in ways that I can’t explain.
“On the ball, being in the positions, believing in myself and helping others around me. I think the boss at Villa has really demanded that off me. It’s always in my head [being a leader] going into games and doing it on a weekly basis.”
Asked if he expected to be called up to the squad sooner, Konsa said: “Only in the last two years have we excelled at Villa and that has helped me become the player I am today. I knew my time would come. I was patient and I am proud. Me and my family are really happy.”
After Konsa received his maiden senior call-up, former England defender Terry took to social media to congratulate him. He posted: “I’m so happy for you mate, you’ve been excellent and so consistent over the last three years, you fully deserve it. It’s just the start. Enjoy it.”
Throughout the press conference, Konsa was questioned regarding Terry’s impact on his growth. “When it comes from a legend like John Terry, it means a lot,” he stated. Over our two years together, he significantly improved my game. I used to bombard him with questions about how he kept playing at such a high level for so long. I’ve followed a lot of his advice, which has helped me develop into the player I am today.
“He communicated with me and sent me a kind note. He merely responded, “Congratulations, and I should just be myself and enjoy it.”
