What Kelvin Wilson said about Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels
Matz Sels, the goalkeeper for Nottingham Forest, has come under fire from Kelvin Wilson for his role in Brighton’s victory on Sunday. Andrew Omobamidele’s own goal put Forest just outside the relegation zone, and the Reds lost 1-0 as a result.
Earlier this week, the former Forest defender talked with the Forest Focus podcast. In his opinion, Sels didn’t unduly bask in his own glory after Forest’s Saturday defeat.
So, what exactly did Wilson have to say about the 32-year-old stopper? Let’s take a closer look at what the man who served Forest with distinction had to say…
What Kelvin Wilson said about Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels
The Belgian goalkeeper, Sels signed for Forest on transfer deadline day in January. Nuno Espirito Santo made a judgement call after a series of high-profile errors made by Matt Turner.
On Sunday, it didn’t appear as though Sels made a glaring error for Forest. However, Wilson believes that he could have been stronger – with Forest now scaring him to death at set pieces.
Wilson told the Forest Focus podcast: “I don’t know if anyone else feels this way but every time there is a set piece I get nervous now. When we clear it it’s like a relief. You can see the players are nervous when they get a set piece.
“I think if the goalkeeper is more commanding on Sunday – with a bigger shout, I think we clear it away. I just don’t think it was a very commanding moment.”
Sels is doing a job but there is more to come
It’s hard to understand what actually happened with the goal on Sunday. Omobamidele appeared far too close to Forest custodian Sels and clearly, he could have been stronger.
Perhaps the issue came with the defender’s starting position. Ultimately the responsibility in that situation needs to fall on the goalkeeper to get his defensive unit set up properly.
Sels at 32 is hardly going to be a long-term option between the posts for Forest. Right now, he’s doing a job between the posts but he does perhaps need to show a little bit more going into the business end of the campaign.
