The FA criticise Birmingham City and list six reasons for tripling fine

Birmingham City have been criticised by The Football Association for ‘taking no proactive steps to address recurring behaviour’ after they were fined for their players’ part in an altercation at Shrewsbury Town last month.

A melee ensued at The Croud Meadow on October 8 during Blues’ 4-0 Bristol Street Motors Trophy victory after Scott Wright was scythed down by Taylor Perry. Wright reacted angrily and a number of his Blues teammates piled in to defend him in the centre circle.

Referee James O’Connor subsequently booked four players – two from either side – before allowing the game to resume and filing a report of the incident to The FA afterwards. Both teams were charged by The FA last month and fines have now been issued.

While Shrewsbury have been handed the standard £2,500 fine League One clubs usually receive for an incident of this type, Blues have been ordered to pay £7,500. The FA listed six reasons why they have tripled the club’s fine, citing the reactions of Ben Davies – who was booked alongside Wright – and goalkeeper Ryan Allsop, and the fact that Blues were only recently charged for a similar incident against Wrexham
