Tottenham now facing financial issues
It would be a “huge” financial blow for Tottenham if they fail to qualify for the Champions League when it changes format next season.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about England missing out on a fifth Champions League qualification spot.
The Champions League is set to change format to a Swiss-style model next season, introducing four new qualification spots and a new league-style format.
Two wildcard spots are set to be given to the two highest-performing leagues in Uefa competitions.
England are set to miss out on an additional qualification spot after Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool all crashed out of Europe last week.
Tottenham are currently fifth in the Premier League table and are at risk of missing out on qualification to the Champions League next season.
Tottenham set for ‘huge’ Champions League blow
Maguire explained that Champions League participation is worth “three times” as much as the Europa League so missing out would inflict a “huge blow”.
“Of course, it would be a huge blow for Spurs or Villa if they drop out. [of the top four]” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“The new Swiss model format will be more lucrative and it is also very flexible.
“At the moment, clubs are guaranteed four home games but I suspect within two or three years the big clubs will want half a dozen.
“Being in the Champions League is already worth three times as much money as the Europa League.
“Plus you get bigger bonuses from sponsors and on a broader level it will also help Uefa coefficient.“
