Recent changes to Premier League regulations mean Nottingham Forest will be sanctioned this season if they are charged with breaching Financial Fair Play rules on Monday.

All 20 Premier League clubs were made to submit their accounts for the 2022-2023 season by December 31, with clubs being notified of any charges on Monday, January 15.

According to a report in The Athletic on Sunday, Forest and Everton are “expecting” to be referred to an independent commission due to potentially exceeding the permitted losses of £105million for the three-year period ending in 2023.

The City Ground outfit were promoted to the Premier League in May 2022 and spent over £150m in their first season back in the top flight, signing the likes of Neco Williams, Morgan Gibbs-White, Taiwo Awoniyi and Jesse Lingard and later securing a 16th placed finish.

However, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side could now become the third side in Premier League history to be charged with breaching FFP regulations after Everton and Manchester City in 2023.

Earlier this season, Everton were found to have breached FFP rules for the 2021/22 campaign and docked ten points after an independent commission heard their case.

Learning from their dealing with the Goodison Park club last year, the Premier League brought forward the date by which clubs needed to submit their accounts to ensure all cases are started and concluded in the same season.

Speaking to the Telegraph earlier this month, a Nottingham Forest spokesman insisted the club had “fully complied” with FFP regulations.
