Spurs To recall £10m player as his a nightmare out on loan
As of right now in January, Tottenham Hotspur currently have six members of their first team squad out on loan across Europe.
Eric Dier and Djed Spence are the latest players to leave the club for pastures new, with the defenders joining Bayern Munich and Genoa respectively.
Ashley Phillips and Joe Rodon are currently on loan in the Championship, whereas Tanguy Ndombele is currently playing his football at Galatasaray.
And that leaves just one player, Japhet Tanganga.
Thought to be available for around £10m in the summer, the defender ended up heading to German side Augsburg on a season-long loan.
And whilst that deal looked like a smart one for the 24-year-old on the outset, it hasn’t turned out to be something of a nightmare.
Tanganga hasn’t started a single game for the side since his arrival at the end of June.
And although he did experience a knee injury towards the start of his loan, he’s now being left out when fit.
According to reports, there’s currently no break clause in the loan agreement, meaning Tottenham would have to negotiate a deal in January.
Tottenham have to recall Japhet Tanganga from his nightmare loan in January
Whilst Tanganga isn’t currently needed in Ange Postecoglou’s playing squad, it would surely be best to retrieve the defender and seek another move.
There’s simply no benefit to Tanganga sitting in the stands for a side whilst he’s out on loan.
Spurs either need the former England youth international to improve as a player, or increase as an asset.
There’s no doubt that Postecoglou’s side will have lofty ambitions in the summer to come, and will likely shuffle their squad around a ton.
And if Tanganga has just spent a year playing no football, it’s hardly ideal for any party.
Tottenham surely would be able to negotiate a solution in January, Augsburg aren’t benefiting from the loan either.
And there would be a host of sides willing to take the centre-back this month if he did become available.
That being said, Tottenham may be planning one more move of their own before the month ends.
