Sky Sports journalist drops Jack Butland update at Rangers within last hour

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland is expected to be named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the March international fixtures, according to Rob Dorsett.

The Sky Sports journalist reported on Wednesday (3:05pm, 13 March) that the Ibrox stopper is expected to receive his first international call-up in more than five years for friendlies against Belgium and Brazil this month.

Newcastle United’s Nick has been ruled out through injury while Aaron Ramsdale has become the second choice at Arsenal behind David Raya, making it “almost certain” that Southgate will choose Butland when he names his squad on Thursday (14 March).

Alongside the Rangers number one, Joe Gomez is set to return to the Three Lions squad to end a four-year absence, while Ivan Toney is likely to be recalled for the first time since returning from his eight-month ban.

Will Jack Butland leave Rangers and return to England?

Anybody who has watched Butland in action for Philippe Clement’s side this season will know that the Englishman is more than deserving of an international call-up given his incredible performances at Ibrox this season.

Michael Beale invested heavily in a lot of players during the summer transfer window and while most players proved to be flops like Sam Lammers and Jose Cifuentes, Butland has been a revelation ever since he arrived in Glasgow.

Whether or not he will push Jordan Pickford out of his starting role this month remains to be seen, but the 31-year-old is easily one of the best three English keepers playing at this moment in time and deserves this sort of recognition.

Hopefully, Butland will impress for Southgate’s side against both Belgium and Brazil, but those in charge at Ibrox will be hoping that his performances at an international level won’t encourage any Premier League sides to make a bid come the end of the season.
