‘He’s talented’: Peter Grant reacts to Celtic possibly signing forward who scored twice v West Ham
Peter Grant was asked the question as to whether Celtic should look towards possibly signing Bristol City forward, Tommy Conway.
The 21-year-old is a highly-rated figure in the English Championship and he recently put his name up in lights when his goals knocked David Moyes’ West Ham United out of the FA Cup
After scoring at the London Stadium, Tommy Conway scored the winner in the replay at Ashton Gate.
When the Scotland U21 was mentioned to Peter Grant, he labelled him a ‘talented boy’, but saw one major issue in this possible deal taking place for Celtic, as he told Go Radio.
Without negotiations even starting, he thinks a club like Bristol City would demand ‘£6-7 million’ for the player, which then gives Celtic no chance.
Those in the Parkhead boardroom aren’t going to push to those levels because it will mean that they would have to enter record-breaking territory.
Of course, if you could get a player like Tommy Conway for Matt O’Riley-like money, then he probably would be worth looking at, but apart from that, it’s a big no from Peter Grant.
Tommy Conway at Celtic
“He scored two, home and away,” said Grant about Conway’s goals in the FA Cup. “He is a talented boy.
“Going for the likes of Conway would cost you an arm and a leg financially. You are talking about £6-7 million, and that’s after you have had two good games. You have been on the television. That’s what it becomes.
“He is a talented boy. There are a few boys down in England, who are really good players, but you have no chance of touching them. You have Burnley spending £30 million on somebody we have never heard of, and it’s a young player.”
Celtic’s search for a striker
Unless something dramatic happens in this final week, it looks like the club have decided against bringing in another forward.
Whether that is down to Brendan Rodgers being happy with what he has got, no viable options available or just the fact that the club want to wait until the summer.
From now until the end of the campaign someone like Hyeongyu Oh is going to be hugely tested and he has to answer his critics.
You just feel if the South Korean star doesn’t progress, then there will be calls for Celtic to replace him in the summer.
