Ross McCormack speculates reason Rangers didn’t sack Clement in ‘Havoc’ verdict

Ross McCormack believes too much “havoc” would have been caused if Rangers sacked Philippe Clement after their 2-2 draw against Motherwell on Sunday.

The Gers are still second in the table after their game on 29 December but their gap to the top spot was increased to 14.

Clement’s role as Rangers manager has been under scrutiny for most of the season thus far with McCormack claiming that the Belgian is once again under “severe pressure”.

But with the Old Firm clash against Celtic at Ibrox to come on Thursday (2 January), McCormack – a former Rangers player – believes it would have caused too much upset to sack Clement between the fixtures.

“I think he’s under severe pressure to be honest with you,” he said on the Scottish Football Podcast (30 December).

“I look at it and probably say that he’s lucky about two things. It’s the Old Firm game next, if it wasn’t I think they could have made a change after the Motherwell game but I don’t think you can do that before an Old Firm game, too much havoc would be caused.

“Also I think, and Rangers fans won’t agree with it, but the difference in coming back from 2-0 down and getting 2-2, you can get a lot more positives out of that than you can if you got beat”.

Rangers can’t keep Philippe Clement at the helm for much longer

Although changes are still happening behind the scenes and the January transfer window is now just around the corner, it’s difficult to see how much longer John Gilligan and co. can continue backing Clement.

While he may have led his team to a decent finish in the Europa League and to the final of the Scottish League Cup, in the Scottish Premiership, their performances have been way off the pace.

Their title hopes are now more or less in tatters and although they’re set to make their way out of the Europa League table, it’s hard to see how that could make up for the 14-point gap that separates them from the Bhoys.

As aforementioned, the transfer window is edging ever closer and it feels like, if the Belgian wants to improve his chances of staying employed, some moves will have to be sanctioned as soon as possible.

If Clement is kept as the Ibrox outfit’s boss, he’ll have his lucky stars to thank as most managers would have already been relieved of their duties by now
