Report: Newcastle are now expected to launch move to sign ‘full package’ English winger who’s playing abroad
Newcastle United need more depth in attack.
While the prospect of playing Alexander Isak, Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon together is certainly exciting some onlookers, the options outside them don’t totally convince.
Indeed, neither Jacob Murphy nor Miguel Almiron have consistently covered themselves in glory.
The latter might have had his moments this season but has frustrated some of the coaching staff – to the point where one member of it punched the dugout watching him.
Murphy, meanwhile, may be a useful squad option for Eddie Howe but the prospect of starting another season with him as first-choice reserve doesn’t exactly inspire with a huge amount of confidence.
With that in mind, a new winger could be on the agenda.
Which brings us onto Juventus forward, Samuel Iling-Junior.
The youngster left the Chelsea academy in 2020 and has since worked his way up to first-team level with the Old Lady.
He’s previously been linked with the club but fresh insight has now emerged.
Newcastle now expected to launch move for Samuel Iling-Junior
According to Sports Lens, the 20-year-old is now deemed as likely to leave the Italian giants.
It is claimed Newcastle, along with Brighton, Everton and Tottenham are all in the running to sign him and that the England U21 international could leave for as little as £13m.
Who is Samuel Iling-Junior and what is his style of play?
Speaking to the Evening Standard in 2022, former Chelsea and Tottenham academy coach branded Iling-Junior as “the full package”, hailing his “skill and balance” and his ability to player “[as a number] 7, 11, 10 or even central midfield”.
While he’s certainly of the age profile PIF have generally targeted since the takeover and looks a reasonably cheap gamble with lots of upside, a problem Newcastle might have is the balance in their squad.
Both Gordon and Barnes generally operate on the left of the attacking three, which is where Iling-Junior has mostly played this season.
Continually strengthening the left side and ignoring the right does not seem particularly wise…
