Former West Brom defender Jonny Evans is set to earn himself a one-year contract at Manchester United after spending pre-season with the Red Devils. Centre half Evans left Leicester City following their relegation at the end of last season and has been a free agent this summer.

Northern Irishman Evans, who turns 36 in January, was invited to train at the club’s Carrington training ground and then was taken to the US for the club’s pre-season tour. Now, after the commencing of the new Premier League season, Evans is reportedly due to sign a one-year deal for Erik ten Hag.

It casts doubt over the future of Harry Maguire’s role in the first-team squad; left-side defender Evans brings extra cover to the centre back department which consists otherwise of Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane. Evans left Old Trafford originally in the summer of 2015 when he joined Albion – a move which left former manager Sir Alex Ferguson surprised – and united with Northern Ireland teammates Gareth McAuley and Chris Brunt.
