Rangers star faced criticism by Daily Record after what he did

John Souttar’s performance for Scotland in the 4-0 defeat against the Netherlands on 22 March earned the Rangers defender a 3/10 rating from the Daily Record.

The newspaper shared its player ratings in its print edition [23 March, page 66], with Souttar’s 3/10 not quite the lowest score, with Anthony Ralston, Stuart Armstrong and Kenny McLean given 2/10.

Despite coming on as a substitute for Kieran Tierney after 69 minutes, the defender’s performance was bad enough to earn him one of the lowest ratings on the night.

Rangers’ John Souttar slammed for Scotland performance

The first of the Netherlands’ goals came in the 40th minute, taking them into half-time with a one-goal lead. But the game appeared to change when substitutes, including Souttar, came on. Goals in the 72nd, 84th and 86th minutes made it a night to forget for Steve Clarke’s men.

The defender entered the pitch alongside Che Adams and Lewis Ferguson in the 69th minute, and it took Scotland just three minutes after the changes to concede again. The same was the case as further changes were made.

This clash was billed as an opportunity for Souttar to prove to his international boss that he deserves a place on the plane ahead of the European Championships this summer, but with a display like that, those chances have taken a blow.

Whether you can point to a lack of strength in depth for Scotland given the negative impact the changes made is another question, but Souttar in particular will need to step up his displays on international duty after criticism of his Rangers form.
