Old Firm title race sees one side count chickens after “league is over”
Rangers fans have seen a recurring theme from our noisy neighbours in the last week or so with Celtic fans telling us that leagues are never won in February.
Maybe not, but we can be forgiven for closing a gap that seemed unassailable at one point when it wasn’t just a numerical disadvantage that Gers boss Philippe Clement inherited.
With Hearts visiting Ibrox at the weekend, Rangers gave another tough test but all that will be celebrated is the three points – if we win that is – unlikely Celtic and their fans as early as October and December.
Rangers back in title race after early season Celtic hubris
The hubris was understandable given the state of the squad that Clement inherited.
Add this to games in hand being needed to be played and a natural seven point gap and it appeared to some as if it was job done.
Take former Celtic youngster Si Ferry of the Open Goal podcast fame.
“The league’s is over, it’s done.”
Was the cry when Michael Beale was sacked.
There were still 30 games to be played and three Old Firm derbies.
After losing at Parkhead, Callum McGregor, when asked about Rangers form into the game with Celtic boasted “they hadn’t played anybody”.
How times have changed.
McGregor’s hubris is long since gone and he is now hoping that results change.
Then there are their fans.
Not one Rangers fan is celebrating winning the league, and yet, you can see social media posts all over the place from Celtic fans claiming that we are.
Philippe Clement has united the club.
We are all behind him; staff, players, fans, even the press.
And we have all bought into the ethos of only looking ahead to the next game.
There has been one group of fans celebrating winning the title before the medals are dished out, and it isn’t those of a Light Blue persuasion.
