Nuno now wants to keep the 22-year-old
Nottingham Forest will resist the temptation to allow Neco Williams to leave the club this month, with Feyenoord and Leeds linked with the player.
This update comes from the Dutch outlet 1908.
So, what is the situation with Williams – and will he remain at Forest this month? Let’s take a closer look…
Nuno Espirito Santo wants to keep Neco Williams at Forest
Well, it would seem as though Williams is going to remain at Forest – at least for now.
According to 1908, the Reds put an end to any speculation by rejecting an offer from Feyenoord who wanted to take him on loan.
Williams is currently out of favour under Espirito Santo, with World Cup winner Gonzalo Montiel preferred at right-back.
The 22-year-old is keen to be playing regularly with Euro 2024 on the horizon – with Wales facing two qualifying matches to reach the tournament.
Williams signed for Forest from Liverpool in the summer of 2022 for a fee in the region of £18 million.
During the 2022/23 campaign, he wasn’t always considered the first choice and played 36 times in all competitions.
Leeds have also been linked with a move to sign Williams this month – although Phil Hay has already claimed that Forest don’t want to let him go.
Forest wise to keep defender for now
Looking at the report, it does feel as though Forest might readdress this call later in the window.
However, right now, it’s impossible to imagine the Reds wanting to let Williams go with full-back options in short supply.
Ola Aina and Serge Aurier are both currently in the Ivory Coast for the African Cup of Nations and are unlikely to be back until next month.
Williams has claimed one assist this season and when he has been called upon he’s looked improved from the last campaign.
At 22, the player is considered one who could make an impact in the future and as a result, Forest are wise to resist offloading Williams at least for now.
Given that Forest have a record of doing business late in transfer windows, however, the future of Williams could be one to watch.
