Nick Kyrgios issues major Jakub Mensik statement after win over Novak Djokovic “Mensik is…
Nick Kyrgios was delighted by Jakub Mensik after the 19-year-old defeated Novak Djokovic in the Miami Masters final, describing the Czech as “something special.”
Over the last two decades, young players competing against Djokovic on the big stage in the late stages of a major tournament have had little success. But Mensik delivered big time on Sunday in Miami, defeating the record 24-time Grand Slam champion 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4).
One of the most impressive things about the 19-year-old’s win is how he kept his composure and stayed ice-cold in the key moments of the match. It is not a secret that over the years, Djokovic has rarely lost a mental battle on the court.
“Mensik is truly something special. Not just to have such composure against the greatest of all time on such a stage, but the fact that he is 19… This is truly a special kid with plenty of potential to do special things,” Kyrgios wrote on X.

Djokovic praised highly of Mensik’s game
Before Kyrgios hailed the new world No. 24, Djokovic had some strong words for his Miami final competitor.
“I’m super glad that he’s using the potential that he has, because he’s got the complete game. Obviously his serve is incredible, powerful, precise, wins a lot of free points with the first serve. Backhand, as well,” the former world No. 1 said of the rising Czech star.
Mensik grew up idolising Djokovic. Then he won his first ATP and Masters titles, defeating none other than his idol.
It should also be noted that Mensik’s victory was somewhat unusual in that he was dealing with a knee injury just before his first-round match and had submitted paperwork to withdraw, but decided to play at the last minute. The rest is history.
