Newcastle believes the “unbelievable” player’s contract is soon to expire
Time is running out for Kalvin Phillips to get the move he needs and for Newcastle United to sign the midfielder they crave.
The pair have been on a collision course for a long time, but we appear to be no closer to Kalvin Phillips becoming a Newcastle United player.
Eddie Howe’s side have cooled their interest in the ‘unbelievable‘ 28-year-old midfielder for now, with Manchester City unwilling to lower their demands. They have been asking for a loan fee of £7million, and for any deal to include an obligation to buy in the summer.
That is not going to work for a Newcastle side that are being hamstrung by profit and sustainability rules at this moment in time.
Luckily, the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards believes that Newcastle are anticipating a price drop very soon.
Newcastle believe that Kalvin Phillips is going to become cheaper soon
Journalist Luke Edwards has been discussing Phillips’ future on the latest episode of the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast, and shared that Newcastle are expecting Man City to lower their demands.
“Phillips for Newcastle still makes a lot of sense to me,“ he said.
“But I think the expectation internally at Newcastle has always been that the price would drop when it got to the last fortnight, last 10 days of the transfer window.
“I think the problem is that if that price drops, and I think City will have to because they haven’t had a really firm nibble at the £7million – £6million people are saying it is now. It might have already come down.
“They are going to lower that price then suddenly it’s going to be a scramble. I think there probably will be six clubs in for him. I don’t think you can necessarily pinpoint who those six clubs will be.
“But once it becomes clear that he’s available for £2-3million and you don’t have to sign him in the summer, he is precisely the type of player that everyone in this window is looking for.“
Newcastle could have an advantage if Man City lower their demands
It has been reported that the England international’s future could be decided next week, but that may come down to whether or not Manchester City lower their demands.
If they do, Edwards believes there will be plenty of teams fighting to secure his signature – one of which will be Newcastle United.
That could make it difficult for Eddie Howe’s side, but they have to feel as if they have an advantage. It has been reported all month that Phillips wants to sign for Newcastle, with the only issue being the price.
But if that is lowered to a more reasonable one then it could be all systems go for Howe to sign the midfielder that he desperately needs right now.
