Scott Wright to sign multi-year contract to quit Rangers, transfer agreed

Scott Wright is set to sign a three-year contract with Birmingham City as he finalises a move away from Rangers, according to Football Scotland.

Writing on their website [29 August], the news outlet reported that Wright will complete his move to the League One outfit pending a medical, which has already been booked.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Gers all summer after he was deemed surplus to requirements by Philippe Clement and is now set to leave for deal worth around £300,000 [Sky Sports].

Scott Wright signs three-year contract to seal Rangers exit

Wright has been in and out of the Rangers side this season but his exit has been viewed as a necessary means to an end as the club will look to use his sale to fund further signings in the remaining 24 hours of the transfer window.

It is a significant step down for the former Scottish U21 international. Had he managed to win over Clement in the opening fixtures of the season, he could be playing Europa League and Scottish Premiership football this campaign.

Instead, he is heading to the third tier of English football. That being said, playing time was increasingly unlikely at the Light Blues as Vaclav Cerny, Ross McCausland and even exit-linked Rabbi Matondo [The Pink Un] have emerged as the preferred options on the wings.

The transfer fee is minimal but that was to be expected. Rangers had publicly let known their intentions to move Wright on this summer and there weren’t many knocks on the door for his signature throughout the summer [Chris Jack].

Clement is facing a race against time to bolster his side before the deadline and needs as much money as he can recoup from player sales. It is a daunting task but not impossible with less than 24 hours until the window slams shut.
