Mauricio Pochettino comments on Daniel Levy Status
Mauricio Pochettino made a comment about Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy after Chelsea booked their place in the Carabao Cup final last night.
The former Tottenham boss will now have the opportunity to pick up his first piece of silverware in England.
Chelsea thrashed Middlesbrough 6-1 on Tuesday evening, overturning a 1-0 deficit from the first leg.
Pochettino struggled to get over the line during his time at Spurs, with the Argentine losing a League Cup and Champions League final.
Spurs also narrowly missed out on the Premier League title on two occasions between 2016 and 2017.
He was often dismissive of the domestic cup competitions during his time at Spurs and has now admitted that the priority was to finish in the top four in North London.
Pochettino makes comment about Levy
Speaking to The Evening Standard, Pochettino shared what he believes to be the difference between his spell at Tottenham and his current tenure at Chelsea.
“[At Tottenham] we put everything to try to play Champions League because it was — I don’t want to be wrong — but I think it was the way to help the club achieve the objectives the club wanted — to build a new stadium,” he said.
“Of course, we prioritised the Champions League with the club, with Daniel, with everyone to say yes, we prioritise to be in the Champions League. I didn’t say it’s not helping.
“I think today, with this team, it’s going to help. Because today we don’t have the possibility to play in the Champions League or be in Europe. I think today it’s important because this [is a] young team.”
Pochettino was ever popular with the Spurs faithful but one of the few gripes they had with the Argentine was that he never seemed to take cup competitions seriously.
Towards the end of his tenure, Tottenham often crashed out of the FA Cup and League Cup during the early stages.
It’s interesting to hear Pochettino admit that the club prioritised qualifying for the Champions League over domestic cup competitions.
Tottenham fans are desperate to see the club end their long wait for silverware and will certainly be hoping that similar demands aren’t placed on Ange Postecoglou.
The Aussie has already suffered an early exit in the Carabao Cup but Spurs seem to be taking the FA Cup seriously after naming a strong side to face Burnley earlier this month.
