Mason Greenwood set to make controversial U-turn just months after Man United transfer exit
Former Manchester United attacker Mason Greenwood has begun a process to change his national allegiance to Jamaica, according to reports. Four years on for his one and only England cap, the youngster is pushing to play under Steve McLaren instead.
According to the Sun, the Jamaican Football Federation have approached the English FA with a request to transfer his international registration. It comes after ex-United coach McLaren was named as the new manager of the Reggae Boyz last month.
Greenwood himself is now said to be looking at making a change as McLaren is credited with having a big impact on the decision. McLaren coached Greenwood at Old Trafford before the academy graduate was suspended and subsequently sent on loan to Marseille.

United sold Greenwood to Marseille earlier this summer after it became apparent his future lay away from Manchester. He has joined Roberto De Zerbi in France.
The player now appears set to make a return to the international stage though having been cut aside in recent times. After debuting as an 18-year-old in September 2020 against Iceland as a late substitute during the Nations League group stages, he has not appeared since.
Shortly after that he was sent home from the trip by Gareth Southgate for breaking Covid-19 quarantine restrictions. Greenwood then fell out of favour with the Three Lions.
Speaking in October last year, then-head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson opened up on Greenwood’s possible change, saying, “I’m not different from all coaches in the world.” He added: “We would like to have the best talent on our team. If he gets his former fitness and former levels, then for sure he would have that level to help Jamaica.”
Greenwood is eligible for selection by Jamaica through his parents. The 22-year-old, himself, was born in Bradford. England have been open to switches like this in the past, with Wilfried Zaha going on to represent Ivory Coast having previously been capped twice for the senior team and also in the junior ages.
Declan Rice and Jack Grealish both played for Ireland before turning to don the England white instead. Greenwood scored twice for Marseille on his Ligue 1 debut last weekend, also bagging an assist. He managed eight goals and six assists in La Liga last season at Grenada.
At United he played 129 times for the men’s first team, scoring 35. He was also prolific in the academy setup at Carrington.
