Mark Guidi suggests Dermot Desmond may need to make a decision at Celtic
There are deep-rooted issues at Celtic that will need to be sorted if the club are ever to make any progress with Brendan Rodgers at the helm.
With the criticism being fired at the club since dropping points against Kilmarnock at the weekend hitting fever pitch, Mark Guidi believes that there is something ‘toxic’ going on behind the scenes at Celtic that majority shareholder, Dermot Desmond, needs to deal with.
Guidi said [The Go Radio Football Show], “It just seems toxic. It seems toxic at Celtic behind the scenes.
“And I said in this programme two or three weeks ago, something’s got to give. The fans are not having the current set-up.
“I think their anger is more towards the boardroom and recruitment. The manager’s not blameless and supporters are not letting him off.
“I think behind the scenes, I think we can all join the dots, people are jockeying for position behind the scenes.
“And it will ultimately come down to Dermot Desmond. This is where, when you’re the majority shareholder, you may need to make big decisions. Potentially unpopular ones with people you may have worked with for a number of years.
“So Dermot Desmond has to decide, ‘Who do I want to stay at my football club who can lead us best in certain departments?’ and make his decision from there.”
Something is not quite right at Celtic
Now I am not privy to what goes on behind the scenes at Celtic but it is clear, even just looking at the product on the park, that something is not quite right.
I wrote an opinion on TBR Celtic that Rodgers needed to stop constantly talking about adding quality in the January window.
Why? Well, put it this way. Imagine going to your work every day and giving it your all and then hearing your boss say publicly that the team he has at his disposal doesn’t have the necessary quality.
Yes, we can all see it, but saying it publicly will not help the confidence of the players one iota not only in their own performance but in their manager as well.
The club’s recruitment strategy is also one that baffles the fans and having players signed for millions of pounds in the summer and handed a five-year deal only to be told months later that they are not good enough is genuinely one of the most bizarre goings on at the club for as long as I can remember.
Whatever it is Desmond needs to do it needs to be done quickly because this season is in danger of becoming a trophyless one if the current status quo continues.
