Nottingham Forest

Manning’s acrobatics, Robins’ remorse, and an innovative strength .

All the talking points as Bristol City drew 0-0 with Nottingham Forest at Ashton Gate in the FA Cup fourth round.

Scoring still seems to be the hardest word for Bristol City but the Robins delivered another FA Cup performance of enormous promise and passion to hold Nottingham Forest to a 0-0 draw.

If anything, the concept of one team holding nother is probably more applicable to the Premier League visitors with Nuno Espirito Santo hugely complimentary of the Robins and delighted with the clean sheet at Ashton Gate.

Liam Manning’s side will be in the hat for the fifth round draw on Sunday but require a replay to make it to the last 16 for a third time in the last four seasons, and a trip to the City Ground amid a packed league schedule opens up fresh challenges.

But with the exception of the execution in the final third, there was much to take from this display as we dive into the talking points from BS3…

Whisper it quietly but…

Was that a missed opportunity? In no way do we want to take anything from the quality of the performance because, at times, City were excellent and rarely did they dip below a “very good” throughout the night. But given how average Forest were, particularly in the first half, and the areas the Robins got themselves into, to have not beaten Matt Turner at least once and forced the issue a little more, was a tad disappointing.

That is a further representation of how well City played as, yet again, they’ve gone toe-to-toe with a Premier League outfit and, to the naked eye, there was little difference in quality, whether that be individuals or each respective team.

But a replay at the City Ground in between a Friday night game against Leeds United and a trip to Middlesbrough the following Saturday is probably a far greater challenge than the backdrop to this encounter, let alone the possibility that Forest should be considerably better at home and will likely have Morgan Gibbs-White match fit and potentially some new signings in the door.

But maybe we should cross that bridge when we come to it because the Robins produced sustained periods of control and for the first-half rendered a Premier League outfit having to sit in a low-ish block and then try and break.
