Manchester United Player Ratings vs Galatasaray as Bruno Fernandes Good and Andre Onana Poor

Manchester United’s Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread after they drew with Galatasaray 3-3 in Istanbul.

United got off to the perfect start with a stunning goal from Alejandro Garnacho in the 10th minute. The 19-year-old celebrated by recreating Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘calma’ routine, winding up the Galatasaray fans in the process.

United’s brilliant start continued, with captain Bruno Fernandes topping Garnacho’s strike with an even better one of his own from distance. But Galatasaray hit back through a Hakim Ziyech free-kick before the half-hour mark.

Scott McTominay extended United’s lead after good work from Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the second half and Erik ten Hag introduced Kobbie Mainoo and Anthony Martial from the bench shortly afterwards.

But Andre Onana dropped a howler to allow Ziyech to score again after a free-kick to ensure a nervy finish and a wonder goal from Aktürkoglu left United bottom of the group and on the verge of elimination. Here are how the players rated…

Andre Onana

Hesitant before he carelessly conceded to his former Ajax teammate Hakim Ziyech and then dropped a clanger for the second. Too easily beaten for the third goal. 2

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Not dominated by Wilfried Zaha but did not dominate their duel, either. Showed composure to assist Scott McTominay. 7

Harry Maguire

Cleared one off the line with United 1-0 up but United were porous before Onana started letting them in. 6

Victor Lindelof

Prone to some meek moments and played United into trouble once in the first half. 6

Luke Shaw

Managed the game expertly and his deft flick set Bruno Fernandes on his run to score. Another encouraging performance. 7

Scott McTominay

Contributed to the first goal with a fine run down the right that invited teammates to run into space infield and he got on the scoresheet himself. 7

Sofyan Amrabat

A dubious recall at the expense of Kobbie Mainoo but his experience was beneficial while McTominay got forward for two of the goals. 6

Antony

Purposeful from kick-off and he had his best half in United colours. Not as influential in the second half but played a part in McTominay’s goal. 7

Bruno Fernandes

Teed up Alejandro Garnacho to score and then slammed in a 25-yard screamer. Booked for a cynical foul and Galatasaray scored from the free-kick. Hit the post late on. 8

Alejandro Garnacho

Two goals in two games and this one should be just as pleasing. Garnacho botched a one-on-one against Luton but not this one. 8

Rasmus Hojlund

Contributed classily to Garnacho’s goal by linking up with Fernandes and applied himself respectably until he came off. 6

Anthony Martial

A strange choice of substitute before the hour and United were worse with Martial on. Did not get a chance. 4

Came on before the hour and the timing was premature but he was still so composed. 6

A rare cameo where he underperformed. Missed a great chance. 5

The recalls were largely vindicated but Ten Hag undid his good work with the ill-timed changes on 58 minutes and United became passive. 6
