So far, this January transfer window we’ve concentrated on players that have returned early from their season-long loan spells.

Our articles – the-perils-of-the-loan-system – and – and-another-returns-to-the-fold – have covered a return to base of Joe Taylor, Aribim Pepple, Elliot Thorpe and Fred Onyedimna.

Subsequently, we’ve also reported on Joe Taylor being given the chance to impressat sa higher level with Lincoln City – no-time-to-unpack-the-suitcase-for-young-striker – but could anther of those out on loan be set for a move?

According to the following source – Sunderland Echo – the opportunity could soon arise for the Hatters to move John McAtee up a division with there being interest shown in the 24-year-old by Sunderland, Ipswich Town, Cardiff City and Plymouth Argyle.

Currently on loan at the League One side, Barnsley, McAtee has had quite an impressive season so far, having scored 9 goals while also providing 3 assists.

But it is the quality of some of his strikes, as well as his all round play, that have started to attract attention from EFL Championship clubs.

Playing either as an attacking midfielder or striker, McAtee has the uncanny ability to plunder goals from outside the area.

Having taken the decision to move Joe Taylor from League Two Colchester to League One Lincoln City, I wouldn’t rule out the Hatters hierarchy opting to do something similar with McAtee.

It is fair to say that McAtee could be described as a potential first-team squad player for Luton Town if he continues to develop and impress as he has done so far this season.

Definitely one for the future.
