Leicester City go into Friday night’s Championship game with a 14-point cushion over their rivals, something which the club can use to their advantage in upcoming crunch matches.
On Friday night, Leicester City will take on what might be their toughest challenge of the year as they attempt to maintain their incredible record in the Championship.
Under Enzo Maresca, City has so far amassed 39 points from 13 wins and just one loss in their league games. They are already five points ahead of where they were during the entire previous season after just 14 games.
The only points dropped came before the September international break, thanks to a 1-0 home loss to Hull City. But while the scoreline is always the most important stat, it doesn’t tell the full story of that game, when City had 65 percent possession and recorded 21 shots on goal, compared to Hull’s seven.
While it may still be the case among some supporters, it’s more likely that the nerves will be prevalent among the travelling fans. The pressure going into the game will all be on Daniel Farke’s side.
That pressure is caused by the gap that City have already built up between them and the Whites. City are 14 points ahead of their rivals, who were also relegated last season.
This implies that even if Leeds manages to win three points, the deficit will, at most, stay at eleven. That disparity at this point in the season would be considered enormous in any other year.
But, City’s momentum would continue if they managed to win all three points, putting them ahead of Leeds by 17 points. Leeds will therefore be watching Saturday afternoon’s match between Ipswich and Birmingham City, which is in second position, in hopes of seeing some consolation from Wayne Rooney’s Blues.
Even if it’s not something a fan would want to lose to a contender for promotion, City has proven under Maresca that they can overcome setbacks. They should not be alarmed if they experience a setback, as demonstrated by their response to the losses to Hull and Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.
In just 14 league games, City has established a cushion that lets players and spectators enjoy the action without the anxiety that sometimes arises in what are perceived to be crunch games. That ought to create a cheery environment in the fans that hopefully carries over onto the field on Friday night.
Something that City will be involved in
