LEEDS SAID NO-£7.6 million Deal agreement to sign international attacker on deadline

Leeds United did attempt to sign another number 10 on deadline day but ultimately came out empty handed.

Speaking in the final 48 hours of the window, Daniel Farke made clear his desire for three new signings – a full-back, central midfielder and number 10.

In Isaac Schmidt and Ao Tanaka, Leeds were able to land the first two. However, for whatever reason, they did not manage to complete the trio of signings on Farke‘s wishlist.

Farke has since made his dissatisfaction clear at Leeds’ failure to add a 10, though Angus Kinnear was quick to shut down any tension behind-the-scenes in an interview with the Square Ball.

In fact, Kinnear spoke of players including Emi Buendia and Gustavo Hamer in which they targeted, before then suggesting they were simply unable to find one within their price range.

Heading into deadline day, Hamer and Freiburg’s Roland Sallai were the two main targets, with attempts made for both players.

Leeds are said to have made a cash + Joel Piroe offer for the former, though the club were quick to deny that. Kinnear has since opened up on how they learned quickly Sheffield United would not sell Hamer.

However, Sallai was someone Kinnear did not discuss and FOTOMAC editor Sergen Dag has actually revealed Leeds came very close to signing the Hungarian international.

Dag wrote on his Twitter account that Leeds agreed a £7.6 million deal with Freiburg for Sallai on the final day of the window, but the player said no.

If this is true, it is disappointing to hear that Sallai rejected a move to Elland Road as he could really have been the marquee signing of the window.

Dag wrote: “INFORMATION l Roland Sallai, who was on Galatasaray’s agenda, had turned down Leeds United’s door in the last days of the transfer window. A transfer fee of around 8-9 million euros was to be paid for the 27-year-old player, who had 1 year left on his contract.”

Sallai looks set for Galatasaray move

With less than a year remaining on his deal at Freiburg, where he has not started either of their first two league matches, clearly they would be happy to let them go.

And despite the window in many countries now having closed, it looks as though he could be on the move today, with Galatasaray close to signing him.

The Turkish window does not close until 9pm this evening and there had even been reports Galatasaray were keen on signing Max Wober.
