Lakers News: 6-Time All-Star Point Guard-deal offer.

on

The Los Angeles Lakers are known for their star-hunting approach every offseason, and the summer of 2024 is no exception.

While adding big names remains a priority, acquiring quality veteran contributors at a value price is also crucial. One such target is point guard Kyle Lowry, as suggested by Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report. Lowry, a seasoned veteran at 38, might be best suited for a bench role but still offers significant experience and leadership.

Historical Context of Lakers’ Interest in Kyle Lowry

The Lakers’ interest in Lowry isn’t new. Back in the 2020-21 season, they were in talks with the Toronto Raptors to trade for him. However, the deal fell through primarily because the Lakers were unwilling to include Talen Horton-Tucker in the trade package. At the time, the Lakers were ready to send Dennis Schröder, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and possibly draft compensation, but Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ VP of Basketball Operations, deemed the price too high for the then 35-year-old Lowry .

Lowry’s Recent Performance and Current Value

Lowry’s career took a significant turn post-2021. He signed a three-year, $85 million extension with the Miami Heat in a sign-and-trade deal, but his performance didn’t justify the hefty price tag. The Heat eventually traded him to the Charlotte Hornets, who then released him. The Philadelphia 76ers picked him up on a $2.8 million deal, where he contributed 8 points, 4.6 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.9 steals per game in 28.4 minutes across 23 appearances (20 starts) .

 Potential Fit with the Lakers

Lowry could be a valuable addition to the Lakers, especially if acquired on a veteran minimum contract. His experience and skill set would bolster the Lakers’ bench and provide a reliable backup point guard option. This acquisition strategy aligns with the Lakers’ need to strengthen their roster depth with quality veterans who can contribute effectively in limited roles.

 Conclusion

Securing Kyle Lowry on a veteran minimum contract would be a strategic move for the Lakers, adding a seasoned veteran who can contribute both on and off the court. Given their past interest and the current market conditions, this move seems not only feasible but also potentially beneficial for the Lakers’ 2024-25 campaign.
