Krystian Bielik opens up on ‘unbelievable’ Chris Davies and why he now enjoys playing for Birmingham City
Krystian Bielik has had to suffer for moments like the one he experienced on Saturday. With the scores level at two apiece, Bielik found Birmingham City’s decisive third goal against Peterborough United.
“To be honest it was kind of handball, shoulder, elbow-ish… I’ll take it!” Bielik and those of a Blues persuasion inside the latest sell-out crowd at St Andrew’s couldn’t care less
The Blues captain added: “I’m so happy because last season I hit the crossbar, I hit the post a few times, I’m happy to be on the goal sheet again and, most importantly, it gives the team three points.”
Bielik and his teammates are making a habit of collecting three points. The 3-2 win over Peterborough United was Blues’ sixth straight league win – a feat the team hadn’t achieved since 1985.
And they are doing it in style, too. With Bielik orchestrating things from the back, Paik Seung-ho and Tomoki Iwata dominating the middle ground and the likes of Jay Stansfield in attack terrorising opposition defences, Blues have made a near-perfect start to the League One season.
Until now, Bielik had only experienced relegation scraps in a Blues shirt. He is finally enjoying himself and the football Blues are playing.
He said: “Having confident players around me, having players that want to play – Paik, Tomo or Marc (Leonard) in the middle, Chris Klarer, goalkeepers that want to play, Alex (Cochrane) and Taylor (Gardner-Hickman) on the sides – it’s just much easier.
“We all know what we want to do and we all know how we have to behave and what positions we have to find ourselves in to be able to play that way. The way we work and train, we have never worked like this, that’s why we dominate these teams.
“You can enjoy playing for Birmingham City Football Club and I’m so happy I’m part of that.”
Chris Davies has made this possible. At 39, Davies is a rookie manager embarking on his first job as a number one, but he is making it look remarkably easy.
“He is an unbelievable coach,” says Bielik. “I don’t know him that well personally so I can only say what I see on the training pitches and in the meeting rooms. He wants to get the best out of us. He knows we are quality players so he always speaks about finding the edge inside of us to get better and better.
“I can clearly say I have never worked with someone like Chris and I’m glad we have him. What you can see from the stands and on TV when you watch us, it’s because of him really. We players perform on the pitch but he has given us instructions since pre-season and you can see that.
“With the ball, it’s something new for Birmingham City fans. I don’t remember Birmingham City from the Premier League or Championship when they got promoted, I don’t know how they played, but I’ve been here three years and in the last two years sometimes there were moments where we couldn’t get five passes. It’s a totally different team now.”
Bielik is on course to lift the League One winners’ trophy at the end of the season but Blues aren’t getting carried away. Everyone is out to get them and take their scalp.
Bielik added: “Every single team we face, for them it’s like ‘Let’s have a go, we have nothing to lose, they have spent this money or whatever…’ There is no team that are going to just lie on the pitch and not have a go.
“We have to believe in what we are trying to achieve and I think, at the end, we will achieve crazy good things this season.”
