Kelechi Iheanacho update issued
Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho will link up with Nigeria for the Africa Cup of Nations after an injury scare according to Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro.
Doubts have been previously cast over the striker’s participation in the January tournament after he suffered a muscle injury. Enzo Maresca revealed that Iheanacho had picked up an injury in the aftermath of the draw with Ipswich on Boxing Day.But now the 27-year-old appears set to represent his nation in the Ivory Coast. Nigeria boss Peseiro revealed that Iheanacho will be involved in the Super Eagles’ campaign after finishing treatment at City.”Kelechi arrives in Côte d’Ivoire,” Peseiro said via All Nigeria Soccer. “He has finished the treatment now in Leicester City.”
The striker has been in good form for City in the Championship this season. His five goals so far in 2023/24 have played a role in their 10-point lead at the top of the table.
And his performances for Nigeria have arguably been even more influential having scored or assisted in each of his last five appearances for the national team. Iheanacho also started every game played by his country at the most recent Africa Cup of Nations in 2021.
