Journo moots Rangers move for free agent, ex-PL man tore up his contract yesterday
Rangers or Celtic could be enticed into making a move to sign free agent Dwight Gayle after he left Stoke City on Thursday (1 February), according to Ryan Rowe.
Writing on the Scottish Sun website on Friday (2 February), the journalist said the 34-year-old has been linked with a move to the Gers before after he reached an agreement with the English Championship club to cancel his contract on deadline day.
Despite also suggesting that the Light Blues’ Old Firm rivals could be interested, he added that the former Premier League forward is more likely to make the move to Ibrox if he is to cross the border.
“The Potters have just released him this week and his pedigree, despite being aged 34, could entice both Rangers and Celtic,” said Rowe.
“He would still likely command a fair wage. He was linked with the Ibrox side once before and given the Hoops just brought in Adam Idah on loan and the Light Blues could do with striker help, if he was to come north of the border it would most likely be to sign for Gers.
“Indeed, it wasn’t long ago they brought in Jermain Defoe at the ripe age of 36.”
Dwight Gayle isn’t good enough for Rangers
There is no doubt that Gayle would have been a superb signing for Rangers in the past following his exploits with the likes of Crystal Palace and Newcastle United.
But there is a reason why Stoke have agreed to cancel his contract, suggesting that they don’t believe he’s up to competing at that level anymore.
If he isn’t getting into the Potters’ team, there is no way the Gers should consider bringing in a player who will command a decent wage and perhaps isn’t good enough anymore.
Philippe Clement may perhaps feel he’s a little bit light in the forward areas, but Cyriel Dessers is in a rich vein of form at the moment and Fabio Silva is on hand to share the load.
A move for Gayle just doesn’t seem like the kind of business the Light Blues boss would be looking to do as he continues to build for the future at Ibrox.
