Josh Sheehan Gave An Insight On Why His “Powerful Goal” Was Voted By All League One Side As An Iconic, And Why He Dedicated It To The…

Bolton Wanderers: Josh Sheehan on Burton Albion victory

Josh Sheehan was delighted to help Wanderers secure a “big result” at Burton with a moment of magic at the Pirelli Stadium.

The Welsh international reacted quickly after Aaron Morley’s free kick hit the wall to produce a stunning strike that flew past Max Crocombe.

The goal came at an important time in the contest, minutes after Ryan Sweeney’s controversial equaliser from close range.

“I probably wanted to take the free kick but then I thought, I’ll let Azza have it and it worked out well,” Sheehan grinned.

“It was bouncing there and I thought, just hit it. Thankfully, I’ve hit it and as soon as it left my foot I knew it was going in, it was a nice strike.

“It’s up there as in one of my purest strikes for a goal. I would have preferred it to go a bit more top corner, but I’ll take where it went!”

The midfielder says it was important to back up the impressive win against Birmingham with another positive result in the league.

“The manager said in the week to us, the win on Tuesday probably means nothing if we don’t come here and win as well,” he added.

“Obviously, it’s probably easier to get up for the big games like Birmingham etc. but to come here and play how we did, especially first half, was impressive.

“Second half, we probably let them get on to us a bit, giving too many silly fouls away, so that’s for us to work on going forward. But it’s a big result.”

Burton is usually a tough place to visit and Sheehan says Wanderers had to “stand up” to the challenges posed by the Brewers.

“First half, we were really good,” said the 29-year-old. “I thought we dominated it. It should have been 2-0 or 3-0, to be honest.

“We were disappointed it wasn’t because they were thinking they’ve got a lot more of a chance coming into the second half.

“We know that when we come to these places, we have to do everything right and it’s not so much on the ball, it’s off the ball as well. It’s not as pretty a game as you’d want it to be, but we have to stand up to that.”

The only negative was the equaliser, which was awarded by referee Lee Swabey despite Wanderers’ protests on the field.

“I was complaining to the ref after. It was obviously a scrappy one on the line and I thought the boy just laid on it and almost pushed it in a bit,” Sheehan recalled.

“We tried to get the ref to speak to the lino about it but obviously, the decision is the decision. It was good to come back from that.”
