Joe Mazzulla Provides Update on Kristaps Porzingis’ Rehab from Offseason Surgery

Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla provided an update on Kristaps Porzingis’ recovery from offseason foot surgery, offering a positive outlook on the big man’s progress as the team prepares for the 2024-2025 NBA season.

Porzingis, who was acquired by the Celtics in a trade with the Washington Wizards in June, underwent a procedure to address lingering issues with his right foot following a season that saw him make his first All-Star appearance. Mazzulla shared that while the 7-foot-3 Latvian is not yet fully cleared for all basketball activities, he has been making steady progress in his rehab.

“Kristaps is doing well,” Mazzulla said. “He’s working through the rehab process. We’re taking it day by day, but he’s ahead of schedule, and we’re encouraged by where he’s at right now.”

While Mazzulla stopped short of providing a definitive timeline for when Porzingis will return to full practice or be available for games, sources close to the team have suggested that the expectation is for the big man to be ready for the start of the regular season. Porzingis has been seen doing light on-court drills and is reportedly focused on regaining his mobility and strength to return to full form.

Porzingis’ addition to the Celtics was viewed as a key move to bolster their frontcourt depth and provide another offensive weapon alongside Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. With his ability to stretch the floor, protect the rim, and score inside, Porzingis was expected to be a significant factor for Boston in their quest for an NBA championship.

As the season draws nearer, all eyes will be on Porzingis’ continued recovery, with fans hoping he can make a seamless transition back into the Celtics’ rotation.
