Jackson fires five-word message to Newcastle

Chelsea secured a much-needed 3-2 win over Newcastle United on Monday evening.

Nicolas Jackson fired the Blues into a first-half lead before Alexander Isak’s equaliser on the stroke of half-time. Goals from Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk put Chelsea 3-1 up in the second half before Jacob Murphy’s strike set up a nervy finish as Mauricio Pochettino’s side clung on.

Monday’s win over the Magpies was Chelsea’s first in the league since a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace on February 12. The result couldn’t move Pochettino’s team into the top half, but they are now just four points off West Ham who occupy the final guaranteed European spot in seventh.

And the Blues dressing room was left understandably pleased with an important victory over Eddie Howe’s side in the race for Europe. Below is how some of the players reacted after the game…

Nicolas Jackson: “Let’s go for more lads.”

Axel Disasi: “Already Born. Thanks to the team for working hard for my birthday. We keep pushing. Go Blues and thanks for all your messages!”

Raheem Sterling: “Important win. Let’s keep building @Chelseafc.”

Speaking after the win, Pochettino said: “I think we need to understand we are in Chelsea and of course when you are in a project that is completely different, some people can be confused. When people don’t want to listen, it is difficult, but we are trying to explain that we are in a different Chelsea, building something different and of course it is going to be tough.

“It’s about believing, even when it is in a tough situation, a tough circumstance, like when we were playing in the final for 120 minutes, after three days we play in the FA Cup and then against Brentford. In six days we play three very tough games and with all of the circumstances, nearly with the same team and the players were really tired.

“Today was great to show the players fighting, performing, okay not maybe great, but yes of course caring about the team and in the end beating a team that last season was fighting for the Premier League, the top four and fighting in the Champions League. And this season have good players, it’s not easy, Newcastle are a very good team. Good credit to the team and to everyone.”
