‘Intolerable’ – Keith Jackson moots Brendan Rodgers sacked

Keith Jackson has suggested finishing second to Rangers in the Scottish Premiership could be considered a “sackable offence” for Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.

The Gers climbed to the summit of the division for the first time this season – and the first time in 18 months – with a 3-0 win at St Johnstone on Sunday (18 February)

That came a day on from Celtic dropping more points in a 1-1 home draw against Kilmarnock as their at one time huge lead completely disintegrated.

Writing for the Daily Record [19 February], Jackson said: “Rodgers was spot on when he said that both of these clubs cannot happily coexist inside the same city.

“That’s because, in a two horse race, second is last and often a sackable offence. And right now, while the majority of Rangers supporters are thrilled just to be involved in a genuine title fight, the bulk of Celtic’s fans find the very idea almost intolerable.”

It has been a long time coming, but Rangers are finally top of the Scottish Premiership standings. And let’s be honest, not even the most optimistic of fans saw this coming a few months back.

Indeed, even after losing at Celtic Park at the end of December the Gers were trailing by nine points, albeit with games in hand. To go top, it would require a near perfect run, while also hoping Celtic would hit a bad patch of form.

Both of those developments happened and here we are, with three months of the campaign to go, and Rangers sit two points clear of Celtic at the summit.

The saying suggests that getting there is the easy part, and staying there is the tough part. Not so on this occasion, as Philippe Clement’s men have showed remarkable grit to claw away at the gap.

That is not to say supporters are already arranging title celebrations for May, but the Light Blues must now embrace the tag as title favourites.

All is clearly not well at Celtic. If Rangers finishing top spells the end for Rodgers in his second spell, then so be it.
