Wolves face Southampton at Molineux on Saturday in a match that can already be described as a relegation six-pointer in the Premier League.

The Saints last week won their first game of the season, defeating Everton 1-0. Wolves are yet to taste victory with a quarter of the season gone. Neither side can really move out of the relegation zone even with a win. Wolves at most could go above Ipswich Town and Southampton, whilst Russell Martin’s men would have to overturn a seven-goal swing to go above Crystal Palace.

According to Midlands football reporter John Percy, Wolves are ‘extremely’ reluctant to part ways with Gary O’Neil. They still regard him as one of the brightest young managers in the England, but a bad result against Southampton will leave them with a decision to make over the international break.

GON was previously being spoken about as a contender for the England and Liverpool jobs before Wolves’ slump in form. There is a good coach in there somewhere, and now he is faced with naming a team that can do the business in front of the supporters at the weekend

GK: Jose Sa

Sam Johnstone is still working his way back towards full fitness. In the mean time Sa is preferred to Dan Bentley.

RB: Nelson Semedo

Captained the team against Palace and has started all the league games he’s been available for.

CB: Santiago Bueno

Started the last three matches and in that time, they’ve picked up two points and competed well with Manchester City.

CB: Craig Dawson

Dawson has been there and done it. The 34-year-old starts at the heart of the Wolves defence.

LB: Toti Gomes

Toti Gomes played as a left-sided centre-back last weekend before making way for Jean-Ricner Bellgarde after being targeted by Palace. To accommodate Ait-Nouri playing a more attacking role, Toti could play at full-back.

CM: Joao Gomes

Got on the score sheet against Palace last week. Started all 10 league matches and is unlikely to be dropped.

CM: Tommy Doyle

Doyle is a midfielder that can play a pass from anywhere and is a good link between the defence and attack, he showcased this against Brighton. He’s deserving of another start

RM: Goncalo Guedes

Guedes gave a good account of himself against Palace. He played a part in Joao Gomes’ goal, and so perhaps he deserves a start.

CAM: Matheus Cunha
