How many points Everton and Nottingham Forest are likely to lose due to PSR breaches
Everton and Nottingham Forest could face a minimum of six-point deductions after being hit with charges for breaking Premier League financial rules.
The Premier League confirmed on Monday (January 15) that both clubs have been charged after submitting their accounts for 2022/23 on December 31. It’s a brutal blow for both sides, especially Everton, who were slapped with a 10-point deduction for breaking Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) earlier this season.
With both Premier League outfits fighting relegation, a points deduction would plunge them further in the fight for survival.
Despite their eight league wins in the 2023/24 campaign, the Toffees sit 17th with 17 points in the table as a further six point deduction would see Sean Dyche’s men plummet to 19th in the Prem table, just two points ahead of bottom-placed Sheffield United while being five points adrift from safety.
Forest, who currently have 20 points and sit 15th thanks to an uptick in form under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo, would also drop down into the final relegation place, just two points behind Luton Town in 17th.
Following the Premier League’s stunning announcement, a Forest statement read: “Nottingham Forest acknowledges the statement from the Premier League confirming that the club has today been charged with a breach of the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.
“The club intends to continue to cooperate fully with the Premier League on this matter and are confident of a speedy and fair resolution.”
A response was also issued by Everton who criticised a “clear deficiency in the Premier League’s rules.” The Toffees’ statement also questioned a lack of guidelines over clubs being “sanctioned for alleged breaches in financial periods” already subject to punishment, saying they have no choice but to request a PSR calculation while their existing appeal is ongoing.
It’s yet another brutal blow to the Merseyside club who are winless in their last four league games with clashes against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City coming up. Forest are currently riding a two-match winning streak for the first time this season with impressive victories over Newcastle and Manchester United last month.
