How Celtic have made Rangers appear dumb as pay bill comparisons are made and the Ibrox club is ‘throwing money away

Celtic have a clear advantage over Rangers, both on and off the pitch. Brendan Rodgers is on track to win another Scottish Premiership title, as well as the Premier Sports Cup and Scottish Cup.

Then there’s the minor matter of Celtic’s finances, which are currently worth £70 million or more, while Rangers are nowhere near that figure.

According to recent financial data revealed last year, Gers had an unexpectedly greater wage bill than Celtics for 2024. And, given the players they have at Ibrox, it demonstrates the club’s poor decision-making.

Andy Walker says Rangers are ‘throwing money away’ compared to smart Celtic

Celtic may have surpassed the previous figure, with Gers reputedly worth £61.1 million and the Hoops at £65.6 million.

Andy Walker, a pundit and ex-Celt, believes the Gers have squandered their money on subpar players in the past.

“It’s not so long ago and I don’t know if it still is. Rangers had a bigger wage bill than Celtic,” Walker said on GO Radio.

“You can spend all the money you want if you’re not getting the right character, if you’re not getting the right player with the ability to cope with the demands here, then you’re throwing money away.

“Time and time again, Celtic will go and spend one, two, three million on a player and sell them for seven, eight, nine, 10 or more.

“And Rangers, I think, looking at some of the players that they’ve done business with over the last number of years, letting people go to the end of their contracts. We’ve spoken about it for so long. It’s been an astonishing lack of business practice off the park.”

Why are Celtic so much ahead of the Rangers?

Neil Lennon has described the gap between the clubs as a “chasm”.

Steven Naismith expressed sadness at Celtic’s distance from his former club, which is understandable given the transfer history of both teams.

Celtic have achieved record sales in recent seasons, with players such as Matt O’Riley, Jota, and Kieran Tierney leaving Parkhead for big money.

Rodgers has also sanctioned large deals, but profit margins have increased dramatically.

Rangers, on the other hand, gained virtually no money on the sales of five or more players last season and appear to have benefited mainly from removing high-paid players from their payroll through free agency.

Certainly not a fantastic business strategy, and it is not comparable to how Celtic has been handled for years.
