Heavy “Speculations” Surrounds Birmingham City As One Of Their Top Rated Star Player Has…

Birmingham City weigh up transfer decision as Dion Sanderson prepares for window

It is usually about now, around a month before the January transfer window opens, that the rumour mill starts churning.

Birmingham City built a near-perfect squad during the summer with 17 new additions and a host of players departing following relegation. But it would be foolish to think that something couldn’t happen in January when the parts start moving.

Manager Chris Davies recently stressed the importance of Blues’ squad maintaining its strength. He expects a natural reshuffle to take place, with players who aren’t playing to seek regular football elsewhere, but he will insist on replacing anyone who leaves.

The most obvious candidate to depart is the club’s former captain Dion Sanderson. Sanderson has only played six games under Davies and is firmly fourth choice in the defensive pecking order behind Krystian Bielik, Christoph Klarer and Ben Davies.

With two-and-a-half years remaining on Sanderson’s contract, Blues face an interesting dilemma. Do they sell him while his stock is low and take the hit on the £2million they paid Wolves for his services in the summer of 2023, or do they loan him out in the hope that he rebuilds his reputation? Given Sanderson’s body of work at Championship level, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a second tier side take a punt on him one way or another.

Blues face another dilemma involving Romelle Donovan. The talented teenager has returned from his loan spell at Burton Albion early having only made nine appearances for a side that has barely been able to buy a victory.

The loan is expected to officially be cut short in January where a decision will need to be made. Blues could loan him out again or they could listen to one of Donovan’s

Brentford have a long-standing interest in Donovan and could try to secure his signature again after failing in the summer.

In contrast to Donovan, George Hall’s loan spell at Walsall is working. Hall started and scored in Walsall’s 3-2 victory over League Two promotion rivals Notts County on Tuesday.

Hall is regaining form and, more importantly, confidence in his body after 18 months of hamstring troubles. Blues might see fit to leave him be, despite his talents more befitting of a level above League Two.
