Wolves eye shock January swoop for £16.5m Jurgen Klopp signing amid ‘harsh’ Liverpool treatment

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly eyeing a January swoop for an out-of-sorts Liverpool star.

Wolves are one of several Premier League clubs keeping close tabs on Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo ahead of the January transfer window.

The 31-year-old, signed from Stuttgart by Jurgen Klopp in 2023, has played merely 166 minutes across all competitions this season. Endo initially looked worth every penny of his £16.5 million transfer fee as he started regularly in the Premier League and Champions League last term but he’s now harshly fallen way down the midfield pecking order.

Caught Offside reports Wolves, Fulham, Ipswich Town, Celtic and AC Milan are all watching Endo’s situation closely as they consider making offers in January. If Liverpool are happy to sell the 65-time Japan international, a bidding war could commence between the clubs interested

Wolves are already well stocked in midfield having signed Brazil international Andre for £21.5 million in the summer but an experienced head at the base wouldn’t go amiss. Captain Mario Lemina and hot prospect Joao Gomes have struggled to maintain consistency so far this campaign, so some added competition could push them back to their best

Endo would likely want to be offered guaranteed starts if he’s to take the risk of leaving Anfield, though, so one of Wolves’ current crop would have to move to the bench to facilitate that. It’s a similar case for Fulham with Sander Berge, Andreas Pereira and Emile Smith-Rowe currently occupying their three midfield spots.

Wolves also need to strengthen their defence before they make any more midfield reinforcements as Gary O’Neil is lacking depth after the season-ending injury to Yerson Mosquera. Signing Endo or a similar player should probably wait until the most pressing issue is resolved
