Former England international striker says he’d love to manage Tottenham
Ange Postecoglou is doing an amazing job at Tottenham, but there’s already a coach eyeing up his job.
Indeed, speaking to The Mail, Jermain Defoe has been speaking about his managerial ambitions, and he says that it would be amazing to manage Tottenham one day.
Of course, Defoe is a Spurs legend in his own right after an incredible playing career with the north London club, and as he looks to take his first steps into management, he’s keen to work with Spurs.
Jermain Defoe wants to manage Tottenham
The 41-year-old spoke about his ambitions.
“It would be amazing to manage Tottenham,” Defoe said.
“And the crazy thing about football is you never know. An opportunity could be around the corner.”
Maybe one day
Defoe is some way away from being considered for this type of job at the moment. After all, he’s never even been a manager at this point.
However, we’d never say never on this one.
There’s an ever-increasing trend of club legends being brought in to manage top sides these days.
Mikel Arteta is at Arsenal, Frank Lampard was at Chelsea not too long ago, Xavi is the current Barcelona manager, while Zinedine Zidane was Real Madrid’s most successful manager in recent times.
Defoe does need to cut his teeth elsewhere, but if he manages to increase his stock in a managerial sense, it may not be too long before he is considered by Tottenham.
We have no idea whether or not Defoe has what it takes to be a top manager, but after he impressed Brighton’s CEO in a mock interview, perhaps the former England striker has what it takes to sit in the dugout at a top Premier League club.
This may be something to keep in the back of your mind over the next few years.
