Exclusive: Tottenham stance on ‘Astronomical’ Real Madrid offer revealed

Tottenham have no intention of caving in to Real Madrid or any other club planning to prise star defender Cristian Romero away this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed it would take an “astronomical” bid for Spurs to even consider selling the Argentina international and even then it would be extremely unlikely they would accept.

Real Madrid have been linked with a move for Romero following his impressive performances in north London since arriving from Atalanta in a £42.5million deal three years ago.

The 26-year-old is believed to be happy at Tottenham despite the increased interest in him and is under contract with the club until 2027.

Ange Postecoglou is planning to have the centre-back in his side next season and is looking to strengthen his defensive options rather than let one of his star players leave this summer.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month the Australian manager is looking to sign a new central defender to provide more competition for Romero and Micky van de Ven.

Tottenham looking to fight off Real Madrid interest in Cristian Romero

Romero has been a mainstay in the Tottenham defence since joining the club on loan in 2021-22 before making his move permanent at the end of that season.

The Argentine started in all 34 of his appearances for Spurs last season, registering five goals to go alongside the seven yellow cards and one sending off he picked up across the campaign.

The defender is currently away with Argentina at the Copa America and is expected to make up part of Postecoglou’s side next season.

But Real Madrid are likely to be joined in their interest in securing the centre-back’s services by other top clubs across Europe this summer.

Former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton told Football Insider Romero would be keen on a move to the La Liga giants before the end of the transfer window.
