Ex-Liverpool midfielder laments missing out on Rangers chance
Ex-Liverpool and West Ham midfielder Don Hutchison regrets missing out on the chance to sign for Rangers.
The former Scotland midfielder, now 52, made his career south of the border as a dynamic midfielder and he was regarded as one of the best Scottish players of his generation.
Despite having been born in Gateshead, England, Don Hutchison earned 26 caps for Scotland and scored six goals.
Turning out most prominently for Liverpool and West Ham, the midfielder also spent time with Hartlepool, Sheffield United, Everton, Sunderland, Millwall, Coventry, and Luton.
Don Hutchison laments failed Rangers transfer
Taking to social media platform X, Don Hutchison suggested that one of his big regrets was not signing for Rangers in his career.
The midfielder came close to moving to Rangers in 2001, before Hutchison eventually returned to West Ham after falling out of favour at the Stadium of Light.
Later quizzed on his Ibrox allegiances, the English-born midfielder claimed that his father was a bluenose, the Scottish-born miner also Hutchinson’s inspiration behind playing for the country.
It’s not the first time Don Hutchison has lamented missing out on a move to Rangers, the midfielder having previously described the failed transfer as the “biggest regret” of his career.
Whilst Don never got the chance to pull on the famous blue, Hutchison has previously praised his son Max for being a trialist with the club back in 2019.
Rangers chance usually only comes around once
The story of Don Hutchison and Rangers is a common one in football with the opportunity to join the Ibrox club usually only coming around once.
Whilst many have taken their chances, the lure of Rangers has proven too strong and when you factor in family allegiances, there’s not a bluenose anywhere who wouldn’t jump at the chance.
There are other factors at play of course, but it’s clear Don Hutchison has lived to regret his decision despite opting instead to spend another four years at West Ham.
It’s with the Hammers that the midfielder is perhaps most synonymous, but a string of serious injuries disrupted his second spell with the club.
